Holy Week at University Lutheran

Join us for Holy Week at University Lutheran!

Palm/Passion Sunday – March 25 – 11am – This Sunday we begin Holy Week by immersing ourselves in the story of Jesus, staring off worship with a Palm processional that recalls His triumphant entry into Jerusalem and then moving to the reading of the Passion according to St. Mark (Mark 14:1-15:47). Holy Communion is celebrated at this event.

Maundy Thursday Seder Recreation – March 29 – 7pm – The word “Maundy” comes from the Latin word “Mandatum” meaning “to command”. On this night we remember the commands that Jesus gave His disciples just before He was betrayed by Judas. At University Lutheran we do this in a recreation of what a Passover Seder might have looked like for Jesus, pointing out His commands to love, serve, and remember Him. Holy Communion is not celebrated at this event.

Good Friday Tenebrae – March 30 -7pm – Good Friday is the remembrance of Jesus’ death as the payment for the sins of the world. We celebrate this service as a “tenebrae” service, an old word meaning “shadows”. As the sun goes lower in the sky we extinguish candles and darken the room as we hear the story of Jesus’ suffering and death. Holy Communion is not celebrated at this event.

Easter Sunday – April 1 – 11am – “He is Risen! He Is Risen Indeed, Alleluia!” is the cry of this most important day of the Christian year. We gather together to celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus, which has provided us the promise, hope, and assurance of our own resurrections that will follow our deaths. As He rose from the tomb, so shall we when He returns! Holy Communion is celebrated at this event.
