Unprecedented

I’ve been hearing the word “unprecedented” quite a bit lately. The word means “never known or done before,” which may not describe the COVID19 pandemic exactly, but it has at least been about a lifetime since we’ve had something similar. We certainly haven’t had the technology that we have today to deal with the pandemic, and that is certainly unprecedented. Which means that what is truly unprecedented is our opportunity.

Recently our Council has voted to suspend all in person group activities until April 1st. Council will be meeting again (virtually) during this period to determine other steps. Please pray for them, that they may have clarity and foresight as we seek to approach difficult times.

In this time, we have unprecedented opportunities:

To WorshipWe will be livestreaming a worship service on Sunday, March 22 and Sunday March 29th at minimum. Please follow our Facebook page ( facebook.com/universitylutheran ) and watch your emails for more information. However, you have opportunity to worship by simply opening your Bible, a devotional resource like Portals of Prayer or a devotional website, by singing your favorite hymn or spiritual song, by praying with your family. You can even utilize the large catalog of our previously recorded sermons at http://universitylutheranchurch.org/sermon-archive/ or by searching “University Lutheran Tallahassee” in your favorite podcasting app.

To Learn – This is an excellent opportunity to learn something about the faith or simply brush up on some forgotten knowledge. Choose one of our previously recommended Bible reading plans – http://universitylutheranchurch.org/category/reading-with-a-plan/ or simply open your Bible and start reading. Or ask PJ for a book recommendation. We will also be rolling out new web-based learning activities for you and your families, including your little ones if you have them.

To Care for One Another – Please use this time as a good reason to pick up your University Lutheran directory and call someone to check up on them. This is a time when we need to hear one another’s voices, especially since we won’t be able to catch up on a Sunday morning. Don’t feel like a call like this needs to be all spiritual. Share a joke that you Googled on the internet, ask about one another’s families and work, but then do offer to pray for that person – over the phone if you can. We will be putting together a phone tree soon, something that we have been meaning to do anyway.

To Care for Your Neighbors – This is a time of anxiety for everyone. Be a positive force in your neighborhood. Call your neighbors far and near. Get active on the Nextdoor app if you have it for your neighborhood. Be optimistic and filled with hope. You are a child of God. Let your confidence and courage in Christ show through in your actions.

During this time, should you need anything, please feel free to contact me directly. I will be reaching out to members starting today to identify any needs and simply to share the joy of Christ. Let us step with courage into this unprecedented opportunity. – in Christ, Pastor Jay
