If you’ve ever done any coaching with me, especially around something that it seems like you just can’t get yourself to get done, it’s likely that I have told you about the CANE model of motivation (that stands for Commitment And Necessary Effort model).
The CANE model starts with the assumption that if you are talking about doing something, that you’re inherently motivated to do it, but something might be blocking your motivation. The things that might block (or increase) your motivation to do something are in three categories that I like to state (of course) as questions: 1. Can I do it? 2. Do I feel like doing it? 3. Is it worth doing?
It seems like the first question is where we often get stuck as Christians, “Can I do it?” This is usually broken down into two questions then, “Am I allowed to do it?” and “Is this me?” Getting clear about these questions a lot of times leads to a breakthrough in motivation. If you want to heal people, but you’re not a doctor, your motivational breakthrough is pretty clear – get into and through medical school. Likewise, if you want to do something but you’re not sure that you’re the kind of person that does that – if you figure out how to start acting like that kind of person, you’ll find your motivation.
Baptism is God’s answer to your “Can I Do It?” questions. Because you have been baptized, you are given the permission (even the command sometimes) to do the work of God’s Kingdom. It doesn’t matter what sins you’ve committed, you are given allowance to do the work of the Kingdom. And you are constantly being made into someone who more and more resembles your holy Brother, Jesus Christ. So today, remember your Baptism, and remember that it is God’s response to your “Can I do it?” question.
