About one month ago, Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan was able to sell his piece of art “Comedian” for $6.2 million dollars. What might even be more shocking is that “Comedian” was simply created by Cattelan using a roll of duct tape to tape a banana to a wall. So I suppose if you want to feel a little richer today, you could just tape a banana to your wall and feel like you have millions of dollars in art on your wall.
However, you will be hard pressed to be able to sell your banana if you do so. That right belongs exclusively to a man named Justin Sun who paid $6.2 million dollars. Now to be clear, Mister Sun did not pay $6.2 million dollars for just a banana taped to a wall. What Justin Sun paid $6.2 million dollars for was the right to tape a banana to a wall and to call it “Comedian”.
As bizarre as this whole story might seem to you, I think there’s a trace here of how we are redeemed by Jesus’ death and resurrection. First of all, the exchange looks ludicrous – that is absolutely the case when we think of the very Son of God dying on the cross to purchase you or me, bananas that are just going to get rotten on the wall. Secondly, Christ paid for the rights to us. Just like Justin Sun purchased the ability to duct tape a banana to a wall and call it “Comedian” from Maurizo Cattelan, Christ paid for the rights to us. Cattelan can never claim that banana duct tape artwork again, just like the devil can no longer claim us as much as he may want to. Lastly, Sun said that his plan was to eat the original banana and have the artwork become a part of him – just like we are not only purchased by Christ, but we are invited to become a part of His Body.
A banana being sold for $6.2 million dollars might seem an odd place to find Jesus Christ, but perhaps it is a testament to the idea that we don’t need to look for to see our Savior. All we have to do is pay attention and we might find Him right there. Still, you’ll find it much easier to find Him where He has promised to be: present in His Word, waiting for you to open it and read it today.
