Woof. Today is one of those days. Last week I talked about the possibility of writing a newsletter article via ChatGPT, this week after a short day at work yesterday because of obligations, and then a dentist appointment that ran over time — well, I’m definitely still considering it.
We have these days, right? These days when we’re backed up. Things went late and we have hard deadlines coming up and appointments to keep. Suddenly the oxygen in the air seems a little thin as we’re trying to get our responsibilities covered or crying out for mercy as we apologize for needing to cancel things we and others had planned on.
There’s a very real feeling here of the finite reality of human life. I can only do so much – not even figuring exhaustion into the mix, I can only spin so many plates at once.
And then I think of God – great and glorious, not because He delegates really well (which He likely does, Lord of Hosts and all of that) and not because He doesn’t take on a lot of junk (I mean, He takes on MY junk). But God is great and glorious because His capacity is so much greater than mine. He is a God who doesn’t get backed up ever. He is infinite in power, completing the creation of the world in 6 days and continuing to orchestrate it from that point on.
This infinite God who never gets backed up. This God who has all this ability to create and achieve. This God who is so far beyond me in pure unadulterated function. This God stops and checks in with me. He stops and forgives me. He stops and hears my prayers. He never answers “I tell you what, Jay, I’m really busy right now…” when I call on Him, He just listens and answers.
Thanks be to God that we don’t have a God who gets backed up ever, and thanks be to a God who always has time to stop in and care for us.
