Bring Your Phone to Church on Sunday! #SelfieSermons

The coming week we’re going to be starting a new sermon series called #selfie. It’s going to be all about taking a look at ourselves and how we display who we are to the world around us. I came up with the idea the other day while I was walking through the Publix parking lot and saw a girl taking a selfie with her tongue sticking out. She looked at the picture on her phone, pressed a few things on the screen, and then took another selfie, again with her tongue sticking out. She needed exactly the right angle of her tongue I suppose.

But we are all like that girl in some ways. We all have an image of ourselves that sometimes does and sometimes does not match what we actually look like when the camera “clicks”. We all want to present our best selves to the world around us.

Jesus however, sees us more like a video feed from a security camera. He sees us in our worst behavior. He sees us in the harsh florescent lighting of our sinful world. He has no delusions about our grandeur. He knows what we look like – inside and out.

And amazingly, He STILL loves us! He STILL died on the Cross for us, so that we can have the opportunity to take retake after retake, until we’re finally in the Resurrection and everything is picture-perfect.

Want to really impress me? Take a selfie and post it on social media with the hashtag #SelfieSermons and tag University Lutheran ( http://fb.com/universitylutheran / http://twitter.com/fsulutheran )

in Christ,
