Living the Lectionary – Text

Living the Lectionary is a weekly devotional tool intended to give you ideas for living out the Word of God that we encounter on Sundays in worship.

About this Season and Series: About this coming Sunday:16th Sunday After Pentecost – Textie –  Words are powerful, not only do they display what we believe, but they also help to reinforce those beliefs. Law: Our words fail us all of the time, either because of our mistakes, or because of our purposeful and hateful language. Gospel: God gives us His Word, so that we can be shaped and formed by it instead of the language around us and in our own hearts.

Sundays After Pentecost/”#Selfie” – The long season of the Sundays after Pentecost are split up into series here at University Lutheran, this week we begin a series called “#Selfie” about who we are in the moment.

Reflecting on the Readings (readings are linked to text on ESVbible.com)

Isaiah 50:4-10– The Tongue of the Taught – All of us learn to speak and use language in particular ways. How does your speech reveal what you have been taught? Does it reveal anything of what you have been taught of God?

Psalm 116:1-9– How I love to tell the story – The Psalmist tells the generalities of how God has saved him from some great disaster. What is the story that you tell of God, and how do your words reveal Him?

James 3:1-12 – The Tongue– James has a lot to say about the use of the tongue, and how it can be used for evil. What are the evil things that you see today enacted by tongues?

Mark 9:14-29– Watch what you say  – Jesus calls out the father in this story for his unbelief. How does your language at times reveal unbelief in your heart that you need Jesus to firm up?

Living the Lectionary Ideas

Learn: God’s word is an interesting topic. So interesting, that Concordia Seminary hosted a conference about it. Click this link to see some of the presentations.

Do: Learn a new word every day this week. The process will get you thinking about the words that you use and how you use them.

Live: Try to be very precise in your language this week, making sure that the words you use are exactly the right ones. Consider how the Scriptures are all gathered text of “exactly the right words”.
