See if you can identify these catch phrases from tv and movie characters: “Stop trying to make ‘fetch’ happen.” “D’oh!” “Winter is coming.” “That’s what she said.” “Say hello to my little friend.”
Maybe a few of them stumped you, but you probably connected to at least one of the catch phrases. Perhaps in your head you even heard Michael Scott uttering his line from the office or Homer Simpson with his classic exclamation.
For the next few weeks we will be taking a look at some of classic catch phrases from the Gospels. They are things that we hear, sometimes out of the context of them being uttered around Jesus. Things like “I believe, help my unbelief,” and “the first will be last,” and “Anyone who is not against us is for us.” As we look into these classic lines, we will see what they meant in their context and how we can keep Jesus’ words in the front of our minds throughout our weeks.
For some context: “Stop trying to make ‘fetch’ happen” was uttered by Regina George, a character in the movie “Mean Girls”. “D’oh!” is the exclamation uttered by Homer Simpsons from The Simpsons. “Winter is coming,” are the ‘house words’ of Jon Snow and all of House Stark in Game of Thrones. “That’s what she said,” was a quip often given by Michael Scott of The Office. And “Say hello to my little friend,” was uttered by Tony Montana in a particularly violent part of the movie Scarface.
Imagine being able to explain the context not of a movie, but of the words said by and around Jesus and being able to tell other people what those “catch phrases” are all about. We’re hoping that is what you will be able to do after this sermon series. See you Sunday!
