Politics

I’m going to say something that is probably going to make me unpopular with some people. That’s fine. Here’s the thing that I’m going to say: You shall have no other gods before me. What does this mean? We should fear, love, and trust in God above all things.

By the way, that “all things” up there includes politics. By the way, that “all things” also includes political figures, political agendas, political parties, political policies, etc etc ad nauseum. By the way, that “fear” includes fearing who wins an election. By the way, that “love” includes your preferred candidate and party. By the way, that “trust” includes all of the things that you’re trusting and believing happens “if”: if the right person is elected, if the wrong person is elected, if whatever.

Notice what I’m not saying. I’m not saying that politics aren’t important. They are just not AS important.

If you can’t say, “God is more important than this,” you’re sinning. If you can’t say, “I fear God more than this possible outcome,” you’re sinning. If you can’t say “I love God more than this,” you’re sinning. If you can’t say, “I trust God more than this,” you’re sinning. And you’re sinning in a big way. Commandment numero uno. It is number one for a reason.

Breaking the first commandment is called “idolatry”. The problem with idolatry is that it doesn’t work out pragmatically, but it comforts us in a weird way. It’s a placebo-god, a sugar pill deity, a fabricated talisman. We stare into the googly eyes of the statue of our made up gods and say, “you love me, don’t you? I’m good enough, aren’t I? I’m faultless in this, right?” And we take the silence of our made up gods to be an approving “yes”, but a yes without any action on the god’s part.

God doesn’t do that. God speaks. God calls out our sins and makes us uncomfortable, but He does so in order act on us, to show us grace. God speaks and then delivers, and He delivers good stuff. Not all of our idols are political, but some are. Not all of our politics are idolatrous, but some are. Watch your fear. Watch your love. Watch your trust. Idols won’t give you what you need. A true God will.
